The House of Refuge Ministries, Incorporated, exists to meet the needs of homeless men in the Morganton area to help end homelessness in Burke County.  As a faith-driven outreach, we strive to restore men to hopeful, productive, independent, and healthy living through compassion, dignity, and excellence.  While our priority is to provide safe housing, holistic personal care, and material support to those in need, we are also committed to advocacy and awareness in our community for the benefit and well-being of all citizens.

Our Mission Statement

The House of Refuge Ministries, Inc., is honored to serve as the Morganton areas’ only private faith-based, non-denominational emergency mass shelter for homeless men, eighteen years of age and up.  Our daily goal is to provide basic housing and material support to men who have become homeless, and restore them to a healthier lifestyle. Additionally, we designate a portion of shelter beds to men who qualify for transitional housing.

Open daily, 365 days a year, we offer a safe and positive haven from the streets, a clean bed in which to sleep, two hot meals each day, shower and laundry facilities, various media connections, and social/recreational interaction.  Open from 4:30pm to 8:00am daily, the shelter is and has the capacity to host fourteen guests, and is equipped with two private manager’s quarters.

Our ministry also serves collaboratively with The Burke Cares Continuum, linking to vital community resources such as case management, medical and dental services, behavioral and spiritual counseling, vocational rehab, life-skill development, job placement, and housing referral.  For the benefit of all Burke County citizens, we strongly promote community advocacy and awareness, and demonstrate kindness and care, while building unity and sustainable relationships among churches, businesses, county agencies, schools, healthcare providers, and law enforcement and court officials

Ultimately, The House of Refuge Ministries shares in the responsibility of making the Morganton community a more compassionate, beautiful place to live, by supporting the values we share as neighbors living and working together, raising families, practicing our faith, enjoying retirement, and ending homelessness.
